Crowned heads, intellectuals, statesmen and poets have all crossed the threshold of the Hotel d’Inghilterra in Rome, where hospitality is a time-honored tradition. This 17th-century palace close by the Spanish Steps was where the Torlonia princes housed their guests in past centuries. The Hotel has the atmosphere of a private home. Just set foot in one of the inner lounges reserved for the clientele and their guests and you will find cozy intimacy and private corners where you can sit and talk on comfortable sofas surrounded by wood paneling, gilded mirrors, and a precious collection of 19th-century Neapolitan gouaches. The Hotel D’Inghilterra also enjoys superb advantages from its magnificent location in the pedestrian heart of fashionable Rome, just a stone throw from the famous Spanish Steps between Via Condotti and Via Borgognona, two of the most chic shopping streets. The whole neighborhood is a sheer delight in its own right with numerous restaurants and cafes and, in addition, many of the famous monuments of Rome are within walking distance. The hotel is a five star hotel, located in a historical palace with 97 rooms and suites. As in every real private home, each room has its own recognizable and inimitable identity. A feeling for beauty and attention to detail are evident in the period furniture and fittings, lovingly cared for by a full-time restorer, and the choice fabrics with delightful combinations of pattern and color. Splendid antiques are to be seen in every room, silk and damask, Chinese porcelain, and huge baroque mirrors. All the bathrooms have marble fittings and have been restructured to ensure modern functionality. The hotel offers two lavish function rooms as venues for conferences and business lunches situated in the Palazzo Torlonia, opposite the hotel. Audio-visual facilities are available and the rooms can accommodate up to 60 people in various seating configurations. Hotel amenities include a 24-hour front desk, concierge services, dry cleaning service, and 24-hour room service.
Cafè Romano
The Café Romano opens at seven in the morning for breakfast and stays open every day for late suppers after the theater. You can eat outside at a table on the elegant set of Via Borgognona or find secure refuge “backstage” in the interiors created by Michael Stelea with barrel-vaulted ceilings in Pompeian red, leather seats, briarwood tables, and floors combining black granite with large slabs of warm-colored marble. At the Cafè Romano the gastronomic experience becomes a unique moment, as subtle and fascinating as the eternal city. Chef Rodolfo Chieroni offers authentic Italian style of cuisine with typical Roman dishes refreshed and updated in a modern idiom. Seasonality of ingredients is his cardinal rule, and menus varies accordingly through the year. Fresh pasta is home made – cacio e pepe tonnarelli (Woodie Allen’s favourite) is a specialty – and dry Cav Cocco pasta uses a hard grain well known for its quality. The wine list offers a wide selection of national vintages carefully selected to complement the chef’s creations.
Hotel d'Inghilterra Bar
The Hotel d’Inghilterra Bar is a warm and friendly English-style bar frequented by the Roman aristocracy and figures from the worlds of show business and fashion, where even a simple cup of coffee is a work of art. The coveted title of Best Café in Rome was in fact awarded in 2002 to the bar of the Hotel d’Inghilterra, which is also ranked among the 13 best bars in Italy by the Gambero Rosso Association. Peter Reynolds officiates behind the counter. His martinis are perfect and ever popular, the Kyr Royal faultless, and the Irish coffee a delight not to be missed.
